NEED FOR EDUCATION ACCESS PROGRAMS LIKE AHS

It has been estimated that 46% of students from low-income backgrounds never begin a higher education track, compared to only 31% of higher-income students that do not enter college, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Of the 54% of underserved youth that do enter a 2- or 4-year degree program, only 79% advanced to their second year of studies, compared to 88% of their higher-income peers (NSCRC). Access to education is among the highest ranking catalysts for breaking the cycles of poverty. However, for populations currently experiencing poverty and a lack of access to resources, the likelihood of success in college is very slim.

When entering the higher education arena, low income, first generation students are often faced with:

  • an uninformed college selection process

  • a limited understanding of the financial aid process

  • a need to earn income while in school

  • social isolation and imposter syndrome around affluent peers

  • a lack of guidance from family and school officials

These issues are often insurmountable for vulnerable students, which is why wrap-around college access programs like Alexander Hamilton Scholars are paramount to the continued success of our nation’s future leaders. With the personalized curriculum and comprehensive services AHS offers, 96% of Hamilton Scholars graduate from top universities in five years or less. Over 13 cohorts of scholars are now employed at a variety of acclaimed companies, firms, and organizations around the world, breaking the cycles of poverty one step at a time.
