NEED FOR EDUCATION ACCESS PROGRAMS LIKE AHS
It has been estimated that 46% of students from low-income backgrounds never begin a higher education track, compared to only 31% of higher-income students that do not enter college, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Of the 54% of underserved youth that do enter a 2- or 4-year degree program, only 79% advanced to their second year of studies, compared to 88% of their higher-income peers (NSCRC). Access to education is among the highest ranking catalysts for breaking the cycles of poverty. However, for populations currently experiencing poverty and a lack of access to resources, the likelihood of success in college is very slim.
When entering the higher education arena, low income, first generation students are often faced with:
an uninformed college selection process
a limited understanding of the financial aid process
a need to earn income while in school
social isolation and imposter syndrome around affluent peers
a lack of guidance from family and school officials
